Department of Neonatology

The department holds the highest third-level status of competence and provides accessible, timely, and highly qualified medical care for newborns. The department carries out: monitoring, routine care, and prevention for healthy newborns; educational activities for parents; primary resuscitation of high-risk newborns; diagnosis and treatment of newborn diseases; intensive care, artificial ventilation, and surfactant therapy for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome; pre- and post-operative resuscitation for newborns with digestive system malformations; diagnosis of newborns with cerebral pathology; diagnosis of retinopathy in premature infants; hearing screening, follow-up for premature babies; neonatal transport.

The department accepts children born in the Obstetrics and Gynecology complex, as well as premature and high-risk newborns from Silistra, Kubrat, Isperih, Tutrakan, Razgrad, and Byala.

The Neonatology department has a modern neonatal ambulance, which serves the most critical cases in Ruse and the surrounding area. The ambulance is equipped with specialized equipment that allows for the transport of the smallest patients with minimal risk to their lives and health.

Inpatient

The Neonatology department is located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Obstetrics and Gynecology complex. It has a total of 31 beds, distributed across three sectors: “Intensive Care,” “Special Care,” and “Physiology.”

Apparatus

The team is supported by specialized equipment necessary for maintaining the life and health of prematurely born children and newborns with illnesses and disabilities, including incubators, ventilators, positive pressure airway devices, neonatal monitors, infusion pumps, phototherapy lamps for neonatal jaundice, a “RetCam” device for diagnosing retinopathy of prematurity, blood bilirubin measurement devices, hearing screening devices, specialized chairs for “kangaroo care,” and more. There is also a pediatric diagnostic ultrasound system, a modern incubator, and a neonatal ventilator. The ultrasound system allows for echographic examination of newborns to diagnose cardiovascular, digestive, and urinary systems, as well as transfontanellar imaging of the central nervous system. The neonatal ventilator is vital for the primary resuscitation of premature infants in critical condition who require ventilation.
