Department of General and Vascular Neurology
The “General and Vascular Neurology” department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and early diagnosis of cognitive disorders and dementias. Its activities are divided into two specialized structures. The department is of level III competence and is the only one of its kind in Northeast Bulgaria. It meets modern European standards for neurological diseases, which was evaluated with an excellent score for 5 years during the accreditation in May 2022.
The available facilities and staff ensure optimal medical activity for: diagnosis, treatment, early rehabilitation, and prevention of patients with acute and chronic disorders of cerebral and spinal circulation, including the administration of intravenous thrombolytic treatment for ischemic stroke; diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the peripheral nervous system, neuromuscular disorders, and motor neuron diseases; diagnosis and treatment of degenerative, hereditary, and demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system; balance disorders of central origin; diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and epileptic syndromes.
The department’s specialized stroke team is highly qualified, equipped with the necessary apparatus and equipment to perform thrombolytic treatment. The department serves as a base for training and qualification of specialist doctors, medical students, healthcare professionals, kinesiotherapists, physician assistants, and occupational therapists. The department also has a consultation room for admissions and treatment through clinical pathways, as well as a Social Rehabilitation Center for patients with multiple sclerosis.
The department also provides specialized consultative and methodological assistance, participates in procedures for determining brain death, and ensures organ donors for transplantation.
Inpatient
The Department of General and Vascular Neurology is located on the 11th and 12th floors of the Surgical Block, with two separate structures: “General Neurology” on the 11th floor and “Vascular Neurology” on the 12th floor. It has a total of 35 beds.

Apparatus
The available specialized equipment includes: 2 EEG machines: a 32-channel “Phoenix Pegasus” and a 32-channel “Nichon-Koden” portable device for brain death registration; an EMG machine – 4-channel Neuromed; CVS triplex Philips HD 11NE Ultrasound System with a multifunctional probe; and a LOGIQ V2M ultrasound.
