Department of Forensic Medicine

The main goal of the “Forensic Medicine” department at UMBAL “Kanev” is to provide forensic medical services at a high professional and scientific level, with maximum use of methods with high evidential value. In pursuit of this goal, the department’s team is focused on the development, implementation, and advancement of methods with high evidential value, improving the material base with modern equipment, and training new staff. The department serves as a base for forensic medical expert activities.

The activities of the “Forensic Medicine” department are organized into three sectors: “Clinical Forensic Medicine and Documentation”, “Forensic Pathology”, and “Septic and High-Risk Forensic Pathology”. The following activities are performed in these sectors:

  • Forensic medical examination of living persons at their request,
  • Written forensic medical consultation,
  • Forensic autopsy at the request of the deceased’s relatives,
  • Laboratory tests and forensic medical tests,
  • Toileting, dressing, and issuing of deceased persons.

The department maintains a base for preparing forensic medical expert opinions on corpses, living persons, and written data.

Inpatient

The examination room (Sector “Living Persons and Documentation”) is located on the first floor of the old building of UMBAL “Kanev”. The “Thanatology” sector (autopsy rooms, cold storage chambers for preservation, histology laboratory) is located in the basement of the Surgical block.
