In 2017, 1,418 babies were born at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Complex in Ruse

In 2017, a total of 1,418 babies were born at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Complex of University Hospital “Kaneff” AD—139 fewer than the previous year, which reflects the overall decline in birth rates across Bulgaria.

The OB/GYN Complex includes the following departments: Maternity, Gynecology, High-Risk Pregnancy, Neonatology, and a dedicated unit for clinical activities—Anesthesia and Intensive Care for obstetric and gynecological conditions, functioning under the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care.

It serves as a clinical training base for medical residents specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as for students in the Midwifery program at the Faculty of Public Health and Healthcare of the “Angel Kanchev” University of Ruse. The level of training is such that upon graduation, students are ready to begin work as full and capable members of the clinical team.

In 2017, 757 boys and 661 girls were born, including 30 sets of twins. Perinatal infant mortality stood at 9.16‰, with 13 neonatal deaths recorded.

A total of 2,203 women were admitted to the Maternity Ward, including 6 foreign nationals.

During the year, 11 fathers and grandmothers took advantage of the hospital’s offer to be present at the birth of their children or grandchildren.

An increasing number of families chose to preserve their newborns’ stem cells compared to 2016.

The year also saw continued participation in the prenatal education formats “Open Doors” and “Parent School,” which welcomed 527 expectant mothers and fathers. Seminar sessions with practical guidance attracted particular interest, aiming to provide accurate information about childbirth, breastfeeding, and childcare.

The OB/GYN Complex has certified lactation consultants who support new mothers in the first hours after birth.

The High-Risk Pregnancy Unit admits patients with any pregnancy-related complications. In 2017, it treated 677 women.

The Gynecology Unit performs surgeries for a variety of urogynecological conditions, including slings and prolift procedures, laparo-endoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries, as well as treatment of all types of oncological diseases—uterine, cervical, and ovarian. A total of 1,844 patients were treated.

The clinical structure for Anesthesia and Intensive Care is an integral part of the prevention, monitoring, and treatment process for gynecological patients, pregnant women, and new mothers. In 2017, 1,104 patients received care in this unit. It provides pre-anesthesia consultations and employs the full range of anesthetic techniques, including labor pain management.

The Neonatology Department holds the status of a regional inter-district center—Level III according to Bulgarian medical standards. It receives newborns not only from Ruse but also from the towns of Tutrakan, Razgrad, and Byala. In total, 1,690 newborns were admitted in 2017, including 21 from other hospitals. The heaviest baby born weighed 5.000 kg and was named Deniz, while the smallest surviving newborn weighed just 490 grams and was named Miray.

Due to its Level III status, the department receives all complex neonatal cases from the listed towns.

The OB/GYN Complex at University Hospital “Kaneff” AD provides 24-hour monitoring for patients and newborns. The excellent living conditions allow every pregnant woman, new mother, or post-op patient to stay in a private VIP room.

Despite the national shortage of medical staff, the complex does not face a deficit of obstetricians-gynecologists, neonatologists, midwives, or nurses. A large portion of the medical and midwifery team is made up of young professionals.

In conclusion, the OB/GYN Department at University Hospital “Kaneff” AD is the only Level III center between Varna and Pleven, accepting all critical and emergency OB/GYN cases from surrounding towns and hospitals—Razgrad, Tutrakan, Byala, Silistra, and Medica Hospital.

On the occasion of the Day of Maternity Care, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all obstetricians-gynecologists, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, midwives, nurses, and orderlies working in the OB/GYN Complex. We wish them above all health, happiness, and joy from the most precious gift—life itself. May their homes and hearts be filled with love and warmth!

Happy holiday!
